WHAT THIS CAREER ACTUALLY IS

Certified Flight Instructors (CFIs) teach student pilots the skills and knowledge to earn their own certificates, flying alongside them and giving ground instruction. For most career pilots, instructing is the paid job that builds flight hours toward the 1,500 hours an airline requires — it's simultaneously a career path in itself and a stepping stone to one.

WHAT YOU CAN DO IN HIGH SCHOOL

  • ✓This pathway follows after already becoming a commercial pilot — see this app's Pilot pathway for that first step
  • ✓Practice explaining things clearly out loud — teaching is a real, distinct skill from flying well yourself
  • ✓Look into accelerated CFI academies versus building instructor experience at a local flight school

CERTIFICATE

CFI Certificate after Commercial Pilot

After earning a commercial pilot certificate, complete CFI-specific ground and flight training (typically ~30 hours ground, 15-20 hours flight) and pass a knowledge test plus a practical test (checkride) under 14 CFR Part 61.

TRADE / TECHNICAL SCHOOL

Accelerated CFI Academy

Dedicated CFI training academies compress the certificate timeline into a focused multi-week program, often as the next step right after finishing commercial pilot training at the same school.

CERTIFICATION PATH

FAA Certified Flight Instructor (CFI) rating under 14 CFR Part 61, Subpart H — requires holding a commercial pilot certificate first, minimum 100 hours PIC.

EXPLICACIÓN EN ESPAÑOL

Enseña a nuevos pilotos a volar — y es la forma en que la mayoría de los pilotos de aerolínea construyen sus primeras horas de vuelo mientras les pagan por volar.
