Aeronautical Decision Making and Risk Management
Toma de decisiones aeronáuticas y gestión de riesgo
SCENARIO 1 OF 2
Using the PAVE checklist, you assess yourself as well-rested and current, and your aircraft as fully airworthy. The forecast shows deteriorating weather along your route later today. Have you completed a full PAVE assessment?
¿Has completado una evaluación PAVE completa?

Explain the PAVE, IMSAFE, and DECIDE frameworks for aeronautical decision making, and describe at least two of the classic hazardous attitudes pilots are trained to recognize in themselves.
A large share of aviation accidents trace back not to mechanical failure but to a chain of human decisions — poor risk assessment, pressing on despite warning signs, flying while impaired or fatigued. These frameworks exist because good decision-making, like any other pilot skill, can be structured, practiced, and improved rather than left to instinct alone.

ENTIENDE

DILO EN INGLÉS · SAY IT IN ENGLISH
“Pilots use structured tools like PAVE, IMSAFE, and DECIDE to check risk and make good decisions, and they're trained to recognize risky thinking patterns like feeling invulnerable or pressured to finish a flight no matter what.”
Ejemplo guiado
Consider a pilot running IMSAFE before a flight and honestly recognizing they only slept four hours the night before due to a family emergency. Even though nothing else about the flight seems concerning, genuine fatigue can degrade judgment and reaction time just as seriously as alcohol — a pilot who takes IMSAFE seriously would recognize this single factor as a legitimate reason to delay or cancel the flight, rather than dismissing it because everything else checks out.
Real Aviation Application / Aplicación real en aviación
These frameworks aren't just classroom theory — they're directly built into real preflight planning habits, real emergency checklists' emphasis on methodical response, and the way flight instructors are trained to teach decision-making explicitly, not just stick-and-rudder skills.
Ask Your Teacher / Pregúntale a tu maestro
- Can you share a real example of a hazardous attitude affecting a flight decision, even if it turned out okay?
- How is DECIDE different from just reacting quickly to a problem?
- Which of the five hazardous attitudes do pilots most commonly struggle with?

These frameworks work best when practiced with real or realistic scenarios, not just memorized as acronyms. Whenever possible, walk through an actual accident case study (in age-appropriate, factual terms) and have students identify which PAVE category or hazardous attitude was most present — abstract acronyms become real, useful tools once connected to a real decision chain.
